Atlanta is the capital city of Georgia and is the most populated city in Georgia with over 5,138,233 residents. Overall, it is the ninth most populous city in the United States. Atlanta’s metropolitan area is also very large covering over 8,376 square miles which is actually larger than the entire state of Massachusetts. The hot, subtropical climate of Atlanta draws visitors from around the world and also draws many companies to call this city their home. Popular companies such as Coca-Cola, Home Depot, UPS, Arby’s, Chick-Fil-A, and CNN all have their headquarters in Atlanta.
Atlanta served as the site of the 1996 Summer Olympics and has a strong cast of sports teams including the Atlanta Falcons (NFL), Atlanta Hawks (NBA), and the Atlanta Braves (MLB). It is also the home of many large universities recognized around the world such as the Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Georgia, Emory University, Georgia State University, and the John Marshall Law School.
Among some of the most notable residents both President Jimmy Carter and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. called Atlanta home. Many other famous people such as Hank Aaron, David Justice, John Heisman, Alan Jackson, and Trisha Yearwood have also lived in Atlanta over the years.
