Los Angeles, California is the largest city in the entire state of California and is the second largest city in the United States. The city’s population is estimated at more than 3.8 million residents with a total of 12.9 million people living in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. This city has a very diverse mix of people from all over the world and since the mid-1980’s Los Angeles has had a minority-majority population.
Known for all the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, Los Angeles is home to many attractions that bring in visitors from around the world. Well known shopping locations such as the Beverly Center, Melrose Avenue, and Rodeo Drive host some of the most prominent designers’ stores from around the world. Los Angeles is also home to many popular landmarks such as the Walt Disney Concert hall, the Hollywood sign, Grauman’s Chinese Theater, the Kodak Theater, and the Capitol Records Building. Universal Studios is also located in Los Angeles and is ranked one of the top 10 amusement parks in the United States.
Besides tourists, Los Angeles has also attracted a multitude of different businesses to the region. Most of the city’s income comes from international trade, entertainment, technology, and fashion. Many companies such as 20th Century Fox, Univision, Guess?, the Jim Henson Company, and Fox Sports Net have their headquarters in downtown Los Angeles. Many other companies such as Hilton Hotels, The Walt Disney Company, Warner Bros., Belkin, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Mattel.
Los Angeles is also a very big sports city. In all, Los Angeles is home to 7 professional sports teams: the Los Angeles Dodgers (MLB), the Los Angeles Kings (NHL), the Los Angeles Clippers and Lakers (NBA), the Los Angeles Sparks (WNBA), the Los Angeles Riptide (MLL), and the Los Angeles Avengers (Arena Football). Besides these teams, the greater Los Angeles area is also home to the USC Trojans, the UCLA Bruins, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, and the Anaheim Ducks.
