Frequently Asked Questions

Ventrilo Questions

These frequently questions are not specific to our Ventrilo Hosting service. The following links will provide you with answers to more general questions about the Ventrilo client or Ventrilo server software.

What is Ventrilo?

Ventrilo is a client-server voice communication or Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) program that allows multiple Ventrilo client applications, connected to a single Ventrilo server, to communicate in real-time. The Ventrilo client software is free to Download and install but must connect to a Ventrilo server before it can be used to communicate with other Ventrilo clients.

What is Ventrilo used for?

Ventrilo is used to voice conference with others using your computer and a headset or microphone. Online computer gamers use Ventrilo to maintain constant communication during matches and large guild raids. Professionals use Ventrilo to conduct business voice conferences or online meetings. Even families or friends use Ventrilo to stay connected without the costs of expensive long-distance telephone calls.

What is a Ventrilo Server?

A Ventrilo server is a VoIP software application that runs on our powerful hosting network. Multiple Ventrilo clients can connect to a single Ventrilo server and voice conference with other users connected to the same server.

What is a Ventrilo Client?

The Ventrilo client is a VoIP software application that runs on your computer and connects to an instance of a Ventrilo server. The Ventrilo client software is free to Download Ventrilo and install. However, the Ventrilo client must connect to a Ventrilo server before it can be used to communicate with other Ventrilo clients.

What is a Ventrilo Host?

A Ventrilo Host operates or hosts a Ventrilo server. Anyone can download and host the free version of the Ventrilo server software on their computer allowing up to 8 Ventrilo clients to communicate. However, due to the large resource requirements of the Ventrilo server software and the restrictions placed on the free version of the software, many users of the Ventrilo software prefer that a third-party host the Ventrilo server on high-performance hosting servers in world-class datacenters.

What is a Slot?

A Ventrilo server is configured to allow a maximum number of simultaneous Ventrilo client connections. 'Slot' is a term used to describe a single client connection to a server. For example; a 10 slot or 10 user server allows up to 10 Ventrilo clients to be connected at one time. However, there is no restriction as to how many Ventrilo clients can connect over time. A Ventrilo server can be configured to support up to 400 simultaneous connections.

What is a Codec?

Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP is a communications technology that transmits audible or analog information over a digital network. This requires that the information be compressed (encoded) before transmission and decompressed (decoded) after transmission. A codec is the software algorithm used to encode and decode the information before and after transmission. Ventrilo supports multiple encoding and decoding algorithms including GSM and Speex.

What is an IP Address?

An Internet Protocol or IP Address is a numerical or logical address assigned to a networked device when connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for data communication. An IP Address is analogous to a street address. When connecting to a Ventrilo server, you must specify the hosting server's hostname or IP Address so that the Ventrilo client knows where to look for the Ventrilo server.

What is a Port Number?

A Port Number is a numerical or logical address assigned to a specific process running on a network device that uses the Internet Protocol for data communication. Whereas an IP Address is analogous to a street address, a Port Number is analogous to an apartment number. When connecting to a Ventrilo server, you must specify the Ventrilo server's port number so that the Ventrilo client knows where to find a specific Ventrilo server on a particular Ventrilo host.

How can I create an AFK channel?

  1. Connect to your Ventrilo Server.

  2. Log in as the Server Administrator.

  3. Right-click on the name of your server listed at the top of the whitespace in the Ventrilo client. Scroll down to Channel Admin/Create.

  4. A window titled "Setup Channel – Create" should now be open. There are several spaces open for you to input the title of your channel, phonetic, comment, and password. Enter the title of the channel (AFK). Also, most AFK channels are muted, so you will want to select "Muted" in the Voice Mode box. Then click Ok.

  5. Now that you have created the AFK channel, you will need to edit the server’s setup information to actually send users to that channel after a certain time period of inactivity. Right click anywhere in the Ventrilo client whitespace and scroll down to Server Admin/Server Properties.

How can I stop my server's status from appearing on websites?

Ventrilo allows for a server’s status to be displayed on websites for users who wish to do so. This may come in handy if your guild or clan has a website that can display this information because members know if the Ventrilo server is online or offline. However, for those users who do not wish to have the server’s status displayed on websites, here is what to do:

  1. Connect to your Ventrilo Server.

  2. Log in as the Server Administrator.

  3. Right-click anywhere in the Ventrilo client whitespace and scroll down to Server Admin/Server Properties.

  4. In this window, you will see a section titled Remote Statusing Returns. If you do not wish to have your server’s status on websites, simply uncheck all 5 boxes within this section. Click Send. Your server’s status can no longer appear on websites after this action is completed.

How do I add channels through Ventrilo?

  1. Connect to your Ventrilo Server.

Note: If you would like the channel password protected, input the password you wish the channel to have. Also, make sure to click the "Channel Password" box under the Protected Mode section. If you wish to have the channel open to anyone on the server, leave the password input box blank and make sure to have "Open to Public" checked under the Protection mode.

  5. The newest version of Ventrilo 3.1 sets codecs on a channel-by-channel basis. Under the "Channel Specific Codec," make sure to input the proper codec for your Ventrilo use. Note: If you have Mac users on the server, or may at some point have Mac users on the server, you will want to select the Speex codec. This is the only codec that is compatible with both Mac and PC users.

  6. Once you have selected the proper settings you wish the channel to have, click the Ok button on the bottom of the window. Your channel should now be visible in the Ventrilo client and ready for use. In the future, if you wish to edit or delete this channel, simply right click on the channel and scroll down to Channel Admin. From this menu, you will be able to Create, Edit, or Delete any channels that are on your server.

How do I adjust an individual user's volume on Ventrilo?

You can use the built-in special effects to increase the incoming volume of a particular user. Using the special effects on the server will only increase that user’s volume on your side, not the entire server. Below are the steps to increase a user’s volume using the special effects.

  1. Make sure that your input and output devices on Ventrilo are set to "Use DirectSound" via the Setup window in Ventrilo.

  2. Right-click on the user you would like to increase the volume for and go to Miscellaneous -> Special Effects.

  4. Right-click anywhere in the whitespace of the Ventrilo client and scroll down to the Server Admin/Ban List tab.

  5. Once the ban list window is open, you may place bans on certain IP addresses that you do not want having access to your server.

How do I ban people?

  1. Connect to your Ventrilo Server.

  2. Log in as the Server Administrator.

  3. To ban a specific user, right click on the Username of the person you wish to ban from the server. Scroll down to Server Admin/Ban. You will notice the person is no longer on the server and will be denied access to the server from here on out.

  4. To see a complete list of users who are banned from your Ventrilo server, right-click inside the whitespace of the Ventrilo client and scroll down to Server Admin/Ban list. Here you can edit or delete bans that are on specific users.

How do I give certain people access to a channel?

Restricting access to a channel can be done in two different ways through the Ventrilo software. You can restrict access to a channel by making the channel password-protected, prompting users to enter the Channel Password before being allowed access to the channel (see How Do I Password Protect Channels). You can also restrict access to channels by using the User Editor and giving desired users listed on the server access to restricted channels. This is a little more complicated, however, your users do not need to enter a password every time they enter the channel.

To create a channel that has Channel Authentication through the User Editor:

Note: Since you want to create a channel with Channel Authentication, do not set a channel password. Instead, choose User Authorization as the Protected Mode for this channel.

  5. Once you have selected the proper settings you wish the channel to have, click the Ok button on the bottom of the window. Your channel should now be visible in the Ventrilo client. Note: There should be a yellow (+/-) sign next to the channel. This shows that the channel requires User Authorization.

  6. Now that you have created the channel, log into the User Editor and click the Channel Authorization tab on the right hand side. Next, select the user from the Current Users section that you wish to have access to the protected channel. Highlight the channel in the Available section and click Add. This user will now have access to the restricted channel.

How do I log in as the server administrator?

In order to login as the Server Administrator on your Ventrilo Server, you will need the password set via the Control Panel on TypeFrag.com. After logging onto your Control Panel, this information can be found under the Edit Configuration page under Server Security/Admin Password.

To log into your server as the Administrator:

  1. Log onto your Ventrilo server. Note: Many users try to enter the Admin Password under the Server section before opening Ventrilo. This will not allow you access to the server, let alone administrative rights.

  2. After logging in, right-click anywhere in the whitespace of the Ventrilo client and scroll down to Server Admin/Login. This is where you will enter the Admin Password that you set via the Control Panel on TypeFrag.com.

  3. If you successfully entered the correct password, you will notice an "A" next to the server name on the top of the Ventrilo client. This shows that you are logged on as the Server Administrator.

  5. Make sure to also click the "Channel Password" tab under the Protected Mode box toward the top of the window. Note: Steps 4 and 5 may be done while creating the channel (See: How do I add channels through Ventrilo?)

  6. Click Ok once you have entered the desired password and checked the proper protection mode. Your channel is now password protected. Anyone trying to enter this channel will be prompted to enter a password before they are given access.

How do I run multiple instances of Ventrilo?

  1. In order to run multiple instances of Ventrilo, you will first need to create a shortcut for Ventrilo.exe. This can be done by right-clicking the Ventrilo program listed under the Start menu and scroll to Create Shortcut.

  2. After the shortcut is created, right-click the shortcut on your Desktop and scroll down to Properties.

  3. In the space for Target, you will see "C:\Program Files\Ventrilo\Ventrilo.exe". In order to run multiple instances of Ventrilo, simply add a "-m" onto the end of the Target. When finished, the target should appear as so: "C:\Program Files\Ventrilo\Ventrilo.exe"-m

  4. You are now capable of running multiple instances of Ventrilo on your PC.

  1. Connect to your Ventrilo Server.

  2. Log in as the Server Administrator.

  3. Right-click anywhere in the whitespace of the Ventrilo client and scroll down to the Server Admin/User Editor tab. The User Editor will allow the Server Administrator to add, delete, and edit users on the Ventrilo server.

  4. To add a user as a server administrator, fill out the proper user information under the Info tab including name and password. You are going to want to make this password unique to this user because of their administrator status. Note: Before clicking the "Add" button, you will want to make sure to assign this user all of the server rights you wish them to have. To simplify this process, you may wish to select one of the profiles that Ventrilo has created in advance. These profiles can be found at the top of the User Editor window. Under this menu, you may wish to select "Generic Admin" in order to assign this user basic administrator rights.

  5. After ensuring that this user profile has the desired administrative rights on the server, click the "Add" button on the bottom of the User Editor window.

  6. This profile is now an administrator on your sever with all of the desired rights that you gave to them. The User Editor will list all registered users on the left-hand side of the window under "Current Users". How do the filters work in Ventrilo?

The filters in Ventrilo can be found under the Server Admin/Server Properties menu. In order to create, edit, or delete filter settings on the Server Properties page, you must first log on as the Server Administrator. On the bottom left hand side of the window, you will see a box titled Spam filters. Ventrilo offers 5 different filter features including Chat, Comment, Wave, TTS, and Channel.

If you click on the Chat filter under Spam filters, you will see that there are three entry boxes titled Action, Interval, and Times. All 5 different types of Spam filters use these settings to determine which communication actions should be filtered out on your Ventrilo server. Under the Action setting, you have the option to "Do Nothing, Kick the User, or Ban the User" depending on which you prefer. Under the Interval setting, you will notice numbers ranging from 500 to 60,000. Intervals are measured in milliseconds and allow you to filter out certain types of communication within a desired amount of milliseconds. The Times window is how many times this user must perform the communication action within the desired timeframe before filter action is taken against them.

For example, if you set the Chat filter to:
Action: Kick User
Interval: 1500
Times: 3

The Filter settings will kick any users who try to Chat transmit 3 times within 1.5 seconds. If you wish to make it more or less, you may do so simply by changing the settings through your server properties.

I am experiencing lag and high pings, what should I do?

High pings and lag can be caused by several different factors on both the client side and server side. In order to help diagnose server lag issues, we request that users perform what is called a pathping in order to trace the route from the server to the client. Users should perform a pathping when they are actually experiencing the lag and high pings so we may receive information relative to the issue.

To perform a pathping:

  1. Open up the Command Prompt window on your computer. This can be done by opening the Start/Run menu and by entering "cmd" in the space provided.

  2. Once you have successfully opened the Command Prompt window, you will want to enter the following text into the command prompt:
    pathping “servername”.typefrag.com
For example, if your server’s hostname is calcium.typefrag.com, you would enter:
pathping calcium.typefrag.com into the Command Prompt.

  3. It may take a few minutes for the pathping to trace the route of the server to your PC. After the pathping is complete, please copy and paste the results to a trouble ticket on Typefrag.com. This information will help us diagnose any issues you may be having.

I cannot switch channels, how can I fix that?

If you are unable to switch channels on your server, your username on the server probably does not have permission to move from channel to channel. To fix this, you will need to log into your server as the administrator and go to the User Editor. To get to the User Editor, simply right-click on Ventrilo and go to Server Admin -> User Editor.

Once on the User Editor, select your username from the list of "Current Users" and then go to the Network tab. From there, you will want to make sure that the option to "Switch Channels" is checked. After you check that box, press the [Update] button to make sure your username is updated with those new permissions.

If you are still unable to switch channels, please contact Technical Support for further assistance.

I keep getting the error message "Connected to server, but unable to authenticate your login name and password…" How can I fix this?

This error message is caused by an unidentified username, password, or both. Your username or password may be correct, however, one of the two is unrecognized by the Ventrilo server. The first step you should take after experiencing this error message is to re-type your username and password in the Connection Editor. You may access this by clicking the box labeled with the "->" to the right of Server heading in the Ventrilo client.

I keep getting the "Synchronizing…" error message when trying to log onto my server. How can I fix this?

The synchronizing error experienced after the connection process is caused by a restricted port access issue on your computer. In order to operate properly, the Ventrilo client requires that UDP ports 5000 and 6100 are open for Ventrilo to use.

My vent server is not working, what can I do?

First, please try restarting/starting your server using your online control panel. This can be done by logging into your control panel and going to the Server Configuration page. At the top of the page you should see a button to Start or Restart your server. Press that button to manually restart your server.

If you server is still not online, check to make sure that your server isn’t currently cancelled. To check this, go to the Manage Servers page on your control panel.

Does your server have a "Renew" button next to it? If so, the server has been cancelled and will need to be renewed to come back online. To renew the server, just click on the "Renew" button next to your server’s information and fill out the order form for your server.

If you are still having trouble getting your server online and you have checked the two things above, please contact Technical Support to see what can be done to bring the server back online for you.

The sound on my server is fuzzy, how can I fix that?

Poor sound quality is most likely caused by a poor codec setting on a specific channel or on the entire server. The newest version of Ventrilo sets channel codecs on a channel-by-channel basis. In order to ensure that every channel has the proper codec setting, follow the steps listed below.

  1. Connect to your Ventrilo Server.

  2. Log in as the Server Administrator.

  3. Right-click on each channel, starting at the top, and scroll down to Channel Admin/Edit.

  4. Once the "Setup Channel – Edit" window is open, you will notice a box in the middle right-hand side of the screen titled Channel Specific Codec. You will want to set this to the highest quality GSM or Speex codec (GSM – 44KHz, 16 Bit) (Speex – 32 KHz, 16 Bit, 10 Qlty). The other option is to set each channel to Dictated by Server, as long as the server setting for each channel is one listed above. This can be done via the Control Panel on TypeFrag.com. Note: If you have Mac users on your server, or want the server to be Mac-friendly, use the Speex codec instead of GSM. The Speex codec is both PC and Mac compatible, and will provide great sound quality and clarity.

  5. After ensuring that all channels on your Ventrilo server are set to the highest quality codecs, you should experience much better sound quality and clarity. If the server still sounds fuzzy or broken up, please contact a support agent by submitting a trouble ticket through TypeFrag.com.

Why do I see a yellow speaker when others are transmitting?

The speaker icon that is next to usernames listed on your Ventrilo server is an informative icon that changes as users’ transmitting abilities and actions change. When a user is not transmitting, the speaker should appear red. When they are transmitting across the server, the speaker should change to green.

Sometimes, you will notice that another user’s speaker next to their username is yellow. This indicates that this user does not have the ability to transmit to you. Please check to make sure that you have the right to "Receive Broadcast Streams" set on your username. This can be found on the Network tab of your server's User Editor. Also, make sure that the user transmitting does not have their microphone muted on Ventrilo.

Why can't I talk on Ventrilo in Windows Vista/7?

Ventrilo sometimes will not work properly if you are running Windows Vista or Windows 7. To make sure you can use your Ventrilo server while playing games, please make sure Ventrilo is run as an administrator. To do this, follow the steps below:

  1. Right-click on the Ventrilo shortcut on your desktop
